Terraviva launches URBAN TOILETS, a new competition that invites participants to rethink the public restroom as an architectural opportunity, transforming an essential service into a meaningful urban landmark!
Prizes up to 8.000 $ will be awarded to the winners, selected by an international jury including Cecilia L. Muiños (Mol Arquitectura), Daigo Ishii (Future-scape Architects), Zehua Zhang (KPF) and Lorenzo de Pascale (Commisura), among others.

“城市厕所”邀请建筑师和设计师重新构想公共厕所，使其超越基本的基础设施需求。长期以来，公共厕所要么被忽视，要么被简化为纯粹的功能性设施。如今，这一重要的城市元素被重新定义为一种强大的建筑装置，能够在公共领域中表达关怀、包容和文化价值观。
参赛者受邀设计一座与世界范围内的不同场地特定环境相呼应的“城市厕所”。本次竞赛不设预设场地，鼓励设计师们发掘公共服务的实际需求，并通过建筑设计提出切实改善现状的方案。
Urban Toilets challenges architects and designers to reimagine the public restroom as more than a basic infrastructural necessity. Long overlooked or reduced to purely functional terms, this essential urban element is reframed as a powerful architectural device - capable of expressing care, inclusion and cultural values within the public realm.
Participants are invited to design an Urban Toilet that responds to a chosen context anywhere in the world. With no predefined site, the competition encourages designers to identify real needs for public services and to propose interventions that meaningfully improve existing conditions through architecture.

本次竞赛旨在探索如何通过形式、材料、空间布局和用户体验，将日常行为提升为令人难忘的建筑体验。参赛作品可以展现多样形式，从低调内敛、与环境融为一体的解决方案到引人注目的地标性建筑，均可采用，并鼓励实验性、原创性和形式上的自由。参赛作品应特别关注隐私、无障碍、耐久性和长期使用，同时确保舒适性和包容性。
“城市厕所”竞赛并非寻求单一解决方案，而是寻求重新思考公共设施在当代城市中角色的创意——展现周到的设计如何将需求转化为机遇，并为共享的城市生活做出积极贡献。
The goal of the competition is to explore how form, materiality, spatial organisation and user experience can elevate an everyday act into a memorable architectural experience. Projects may range from discreet, context-integrated solutions to bold landmarks, embracing experimentation, originality and formal freedom. Particular attention should be given to privacy, accessibility, durability and long-term use, while ensuring comfort and inclusion.
Rather than offering a single solution, Urban Toilets seeks ideas that rethink the role of public facilities in the contemporary city - demonstrating how thoughtful design can transform necessity into opportunity and contribute positively to shared urban life.
