Title: The relationship between sunlight and architecture

Based on these two relationships, spaces of different nature find the most appropriate relationship to the specific requirements of their own nature. It is through architecture itself that light and shadow are linked, and through the extrapolation of the different relationships between light and shadow that spaces of different sensibilities and moods can in turn be shaped. Generally speaking, outdoor spaces such as squares and courtyards, due to their open nature, are often shaped by the way of “shadow into light”, creating a rich and rhythmic atmosphere of light and shadow through architectural vignettes or unique elements while indoor contemplative spaces such as Buddhist churches and prayer rooms, due to their sacred and self-conscious emotional properties, are often shaped by the way of “Light into shadow”, which will use clerestory windows, skylights or small openings to squeeze light into special directional forms such as beams or dots to give light a unique sense of sacredness and self-reflection.

Title: Engraving the light within

This project aims to evoke urban citizen’s spiritual connection to natural light.

Introspectively speaking, having control of light reduces people’s sensitivity and their spiritual connection to the natural environment. Ever since the human race managed to produce artificial light, natural light is no longer as cherished and respected as it was during the pre-industrial time. The urbanization process has made the metropolis overpopulated, while the development of light technology is one of the key factors to make this reality came true. With a switch, people turn the light on and off as needed. Given the fact that 90% of the time urban citizens spent in an indoor environment, their sensitivity towards natural light faded due to overexposure to artificial light. As a consequence, they have less delight, more indifference towards natural light.

Title: Ideal Sunlight in Urban Kampung: Natural Lighting Strategies for High Density Housing Area

The growth of urbanization in developing countries is a serious problem, because in general, developing countries are unable to accommodate the demand for housing caused by the increasing population who come to big cities to try their luck. According to Mahabir et. al. (2016), the inability of these developing countries, coupled with a lack of basic infrastructure and services for the community are increasingly becoming the reasons for slum areas or informal settlements to grow and develop.

Title: Shadow Play In Myriad Families

Light reminds us of the Shadow Play from childhood—a childhood memory of light and shadow. Shadow Play is an ancient traditional Chinese folk art, which began in the Western Han Dynasty. It is a folk drama form performed by animal-skined or cardboard puppets in silhouette, which achieves the artistic effect by enabling the audience to watch the plane puppet show in front of an illuminated white backdrop. During the performance, the artists are behind the backdrop, manipulating the puppets, telling stories with local popular tunes, accompanied by percussion instruments and strings, which has a strong local flavor.
